Do the move-out clean after your belongings and rubbish are gone and before the walkthrough. An empty home makes it possible to reach cabinets, closet floors, and the spots that furniture used to cover. Start with the instructions your property manager gave you; their checklist may call out something a general cleaning list misses.
Set up the handoff
- Confirm the date and time of the walkthrough and when the keys are due. Give yourself time after the clean to walk through each room.
- Keep the power and water on. Tell your cleaner about gates, parking, stairs, and building access, and arrange for someone to be reachable if a code doesn’t work.
- Share any landlord checklist and send photos of heavy buildup or unusual conditions. Photos can help the team reserve the right amount of time for an empty home that needs more than a standard clean.
Kitchen
Empty the refrigerator, drawers, and cabinets. Check the interiors of cabinets for crumbs, spills, and shelf liner that needs removing. Qinti includes cabinet interiors in move-out cleaning. Ask what’s included for the oven, refrigerator, and any additional appliances so everyone is working from the same scope. Finish the counters, sink, backsplash, cabinet fronts, and floor.
Bathrooms
Check the shower or tub, the toilet including its base, the vanity, the mirror, and the floor. Look at corners and the area behind the faucet, where residue can be easy to miss. Empty vanity drawers and under-sink storage. If there is a surface you think could be damaged by scrubbing, point it out before the clean.
Living spaces, bedrooms, and closets
Remove everything from closets, then check shelves, doors, and floors. Dust reachable ledges and baseboards before vacuuming and mopping. Look at light switches, door handles, and walls from the doorway: fingerprints and other cleanable marks are often easier to spot from there. Discuss wall marks with the team. Cleaning can address some marks, while chipped paint, holes, and other damage need a different kind of work.
Before you turn over the keys
Open cupboards one more time, check that you’ve taken out your trash and supplies, and photograph the finished rooms if you want a record of their condition. Share your handoff deadline when requesting your cleaning appointment. If your new place has already had its outgoing clean, use the move-in checklist for the lighter refresh before unpacking.
Common questions
Does a move-out clean guarantee my security deposit back?
No. A move-out clean helps prepare the home for inspection. The lease, the property’s condition, and the landlord’s assessment determine what happens to the deposit.
